Billy and Vinny at The Night Café is a bold and imaginative reinterpretation of Vincent van Gogh’s The Night Café (1888), transporting the intensity of Arles into a distinctly Glaswegian setting.

Van Gogh’s original is renowned for its dramatic reds and greens, expressive brushwork, and charged atmosphere. In this reworking, that same emotional energy remains — but now the scene carries the unmistakable presence of one of Glasgow’s most beloved cultural icons: Billy Connolly.

Here, Vincent meets Billy. Two fiercely creative spirits, seated in conversation — a meeting of humour and turbulence, storytelling and solitude. It is a dialogue we can only imagine, yet one that feels entirely natural.

Billy is dressed in the uniform inspired by Joseph Roulin, the postal worker and close friend of Van Gogh, echoing the artist’s Portrait of the Postman Joseph Roulin. The reference bridges art history with Scottish wit, past with present, France with Glasgow.
