Sky on Fire, City Standing captures Glasgow City Chambers at a moment of transition, painted before the George Square renovations began.

The building stands grand and illuminated, its familiar towers and ornate façade rising above the square, while the sky burns with expressive strokes of gold, red and deep blue. Inspired by Van Gogh’s emotional use of colour and movement, the fiery heavens suggest change, energy and uncertainty.

At the centre, the City Chambers remains steady, a symbol of history, power and public life. It is a portrait of the city before renewal, holding onto its character while the world around it shifts.
