The Night Café (1888) is a striking painting by Vincent van Gogh that depicts the interior of a café in Arles, France.

Through his use of bold colours and dramatic brushwork, Van Gogh creates an intense and atmospheric scene. The vibrant reds and greens heighten the sense of unease and energy within the space. There are many bars in Glasgow that could have been matched with the Night Café. I wanted to bring in a flavour of Glasgow to the picture, so decided to introduce Vincent to Billy Connolly. A conversation that I would love to hear. Billy and Vincent are two of the most creative people I could introduce.

I also wanted to dress Billy in appropriate attire – and what could be more fitting than the uniform and approach of Joseph Roulin. A postal employee and friend of Van Gogh. He wears it well!
